I used to work in a snack bar and we used butter flavored oil to pop the corn.

it’s some super government protected recipe (true story)…or maybe some crack.

They actually use artificial flavours that make it taste like butter.

I currently work at a theater, and can honestly say that it isn’t a huge secret. The popcorn kernels come in large bags. We pour a specific amount of kernals and the “yellow powder” (which is really just popcorn salt) into the popper. We then press a red buttin which pours out a specific amount of popping oil (we use coconut oil) so that the kernals will pop and not just burn (if you forget the oil then a really bad smell comes out and it starts to smake a lot) and it makes the salt stick better.
A pleading word. If the guest puts the butter on itself, please don’t ask if the concessionist can give half, allow you to go season, and then get the other half. 90% of the time we have other guests to tend to, and you are holding up the lines. Instead, ask for a patron tray (or what ever said theater offers to hold popcorn; it may just be another bag). They are much easier to get, and will not require you to walk to the extras station a second time.
