Quite a few people probably know the IMDB. But is there something like this for books and authors on the net?

I’m more interested in compilations of authors’ short biographies and lists of articles/books they wrote. I’m quite curious whether there is any such site that’s as whiteranging even on less kown people/works like the IMDB is with actors/movies/etc.

Wow, what a fantastic idea! I don’t know of anything like that, but I’m sure it would be a great resource.
Go for it - build it and they will come …. then you can sell it to Amazon

Here are a couple of databases that might appeal to you:
The internet book list:
some authors have short biographies and bibliographies and others just have bibliographies
The internet book database of fiction:
Each author has a bibliography but no biography
Both sites have content that is generated by users.

My public library subscribes to an online database called Biography Resource Center, which contains the full text of the Gale book series “Contemporary Authors” and other expensive reference books. Contemporary Authors has extensive biographies and bibliographies of authors. It may be available for your free use through your public library — check with them.
