The essay is to write a critical movie review of a film. My question is what type should I review? Should it be a well-known film that has won awards, or a good film that hasn’t won any awards? I’m not sure exactly what the admissions office at the film school is looking for. Any ideas? Thanks!

The question is valid and a darned good reason for asking it.,but your consulting the wrong source. The best way to find out what the admissions office is looking for is to ask someone in the admissions office. Simply explain that the assignment is open to interpretation, and you don’t want to MISinterpret what they want, and then ask if they can offer some guidance.

It should be whatever film you are passionate about. They don’t want to read yet another essay on a film that every other student has written an essay on for the same boring reasons. What film made you want to make movies? Was it terrible and you thought I have to get out there and make movies that people will want to see? Was it awesome and you thought “I just have to be a part of this” I think it should be a film that means something to you, no a film that you think they want you to review. Unless that’s what the assignment is.. just a boring Siskel & Ebert review. Whatever film you review, do your research. If you pan it, make sure the filmmaker come from their school! LOL!
