It’s not butter, it’s solid corn oil melted for the popcorn. We called it “golden topping”

Soft tub margarine almost melts when you look at it crosseyed, like at 90F room temp. So if you don’t want super hot butter, put a container in hot tap water or water boiled on the stove and taken off. Regular butter and margarine will melt over a double boiler easily.

The butter at the movie theaters is not actually butter. Its made out of different kinds of hydrogenated oils and is reeeaallly bad for you.
Maybe if you don’t like real butter, try margarine. I imagine it would taste more like movie theater butter then real butter would.

This is what I do, it is a little bit of work but it is well worth it. Take a stick of butter, “not margarine” I repeat “not margarine” because margarine contains water and it will will make your popcorn soggy. Place the butter into a sauce pan over low heat and melt slowly, you do not want the butter to burn, the solids in the butter will begin to foam to the top. When the foaming stops or just almost stops, remove pan from burner and using a spoon skim the foam from the melted butter. The melted butter should be clear at this time. Now slowly pour the butter over your popcorn, there will be some remaining solids in the bottom of the pan, so stop pouring as they come close, you do not want these as they too will make your popcorn soggy.
